New Delhi: Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to another winter morning under a blanket of smog on Tuesday, with visibility in parts of Ghaziabad and Noida slipping to as low as zero.

The BJP government has taken another major step to tackle the pollution crisis in Delhi. The government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has decided to close all factories that are contributing to air pollution. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Monday that polluting industrial establishments will be sealed without notice. Additionally, the government has decided to take strict action against illegal factories, regardless of whether they are polluting or not.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa clarified in a press conference on Monday that factories that pollute and fail to apply for OCEM will now face strict action. He said the government has identified such industrial establishments and is launching an intensive campaign starting today. Sirsa stated bluntly, “These factories will be sealed without notice. No further opportunity will be given. Everyone has already been given ample opportunity, so the sealing process has begun today.” He also stated that action will be taken against industries that have not applied for OCEM, even though the 31st was the deadline.

The Environment Minister said that the weather is expected to improve in the next 24 hours, which could lead to a further drop in the capital’s Air Quality Index (AQI). He added that nightly street cleaning campaigns are continuing. Approximately 35,000 metric tons of garbage is being disposed of daily, which is helping to reduce pollution levels.

The Minister stated that a massive special campaign is underway to make Delhi debris-free, and millions of metric tons of debris have been removed so far. He added that water bodies will be revived in collaboration with the DDA and the Revenue Department. This year, a target has been set to restore at least 50% of the lost water bodies to their original state. According to him, this initiative will play a vital role in controlling pollution.
