New Delhi: The nation’s capital saw another drop in temperature on Sunday, with temperatures falling below 5°C for the third time this winter.
Delhi’s weather representative station, Safdarjung, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9 degrees Celsius this morning, which is four degrees less than the normal temperature of the year. Yesterday the minimum temperature of Delhi was 8°C.
According to forecasts, Delhi’s lowest temperature is expected to remain cold until Tuesday, at around 5°C. This year, the mercury fell below 5 degrees Celsius (4.9 degrees Celsius) for the first time on November 11, first time the temperature fell below this limit since December 6, 1987. With this, Delhi’s minimum temperature has fallen to a low of 4.5 degrees Celsius. The next day’s temperature was lowest for December from the last three years. Later, the temperature increased slightly and reached 9 degrees Celsius, and the people of Delhi got some respite from the cold.
“The rise in temperature was primarily due to local variations in winds. Northwesterly winds have been consistent across the plains, and depending on conditions like clear skies, the temperature has again dropped,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official explained.
On December 28, 2019, the lowest temperature ever recorded at Safdarjung in December over the previous ten years was 2.4°C. On December 27, 1930, the lowest temperature ever recorded for the month of December was 0°C. On Sunday, however, Delhi’s air quality declined once more, falling into the “poor” category. At 9 am on Saturday, the average AQI was 257 (bad), down from 193 (moderate) at 4 pm.
