New Delhi: The Election Commission has recently announced that elections will be held for three Rajya Sabha seats, in Delhi and one seat in Sikkim on January 19th. The current terms of Rajya Sabha members Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta and Narayan Das Gupta from Delhi will come to an end on January 27th year. Similarly Lachungpa from the Sikkim Democratic Front will see his term expire on February 23rd year.
As per the Election Commission’s announcement the election to fill these four vacancies is scheduled for January 19th (Friday). The official notification will be issued on January 2nd. Interested candidates can file their nominations until January 9th. Following a tradition voting will take place between 9 AM and 4 PM with the counting of votes commencing at 5 PM. The Election Commission has confirmed that the National Capital Territory of Delhi has been allocated three seats in the Rajya Sabha.
It is worth mentioning that Sanjay Singh is currently under custody following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. The Election Panel clarified that separate elections would be conducted in Delhi for each of the three seats since these seats were established under cycles specified during the initiation of the States provisional constitution back in 1952.
The Indian National Congress raised objections to the decision of holding elections for all three vacancies, which was legally contested in the Delhi High Court in 1994. The case was titled A.K. Walia vs. Bharat Singh and others.
The matter was presented as a challenge against the decision of the Election Commission to conduct elections for all three vacancies, arguing that each of the three vacancies should be filled through separate elections. The Election Commission argued that general elections should be conducted because the Rajya Sabha election follows a proportional representation system.
