With the city of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) being engulfed in dense smog and fog on Monday, the flight activities at the airport there were seriously impacted and consequently about 40 flights were cancelled, and several other flights were delayed as well because visibility was poor. The bad weather conditions which were experienced in the early morning hours confirmed by the airport officials that the air traffic was severely hampered.

Based on statistics provided by the Sameer app of the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city of Delhi was at a severe level of 454 at 7.05 am. This was after recording an even worse reading of 461 on Sunday which was the second-poorest air quality day in December in the books. The dangerous air-environment coupled with thick fog diminished the visibility and provided difficult circumstances to flight operations.

To counter the situation, the Delhi airport gave a travel advisory early Monday morning warning the passengers of potential disruptions. On social media platform X, airport authorities expressed that flight activities would be influenced by heavy fog and assured passengers that it was working to ensure it minimised inconvenience. Passengers were urged to keep in touch with their respective airlines and they said they were sorry of causing inconvenience to the passengers.

Some airlines also gave warnings such as IndiGo which has been affected by the disruption of its operations in the last week. The airline also advised that low visibility and fog over Delhi were likely to affect the flight timing and advised passengers to keep on monitoring their flight status regularly over its mobile application or the site. The IndiGo system also provided assurance to the travelers that its staffs were closely monitoring the weather condition and were willing to offer support and guarantee passenger safety.

Efforts are still underway to check the situation since the status of weather and pollution levels is still an issue, and passengers are suggested to plan their trips and stay aware of the additional changes.
