Delhi Police have now arrested a serial killer by the name Ajay Lamba, who has been on the run for almost 24 years and has been linked to multiple murders of cab drivers, plus an involvement in multiple instances of robbery, theft and smuggling. After decades of searching and investigating across many states, ending with high-stakes surveillance, his arrest concludes the many-year-long manhunt.
Police said that Lamba got into the business of crimes when he, with the help of his accomplices, would hire taxi cabs in the pretext of travelling mostly to Uttarakhand, approximately in or about the year 2001. After boarding the vehicle, they would knock out and kill the bus driver, dump the carcass in the off-beaten wild mountain areas, and infiltrate the stolen cars in Nepal border to sell them. The gang mainly worked in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. With only four known victims, only one body was retrieved.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditya Gautam termed Lamba as a notorious robber-cum-murderer who always acted in the same manner, which was brutal. His two other accomplices, Dhirendra and Dilip Negi, had been arrested earlier; Lamba, however, remained a fugitive over the years by moving around often and changing identity.
A school dropout who was born in Delhi and later shifted to Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Lamba met his future trusted fellows in the business. He has a criminal record that involves murder, robbery, drug trafficking and possession of unlawful weapons. He, in recent years, got engaged in the business of smuggling ganja to other states of India, especially to Delhi, and even in 2021, he was arrested under the NDPS in Delhi. In 2024, he was again arrested in Odisha in a case of robbery of a jewellery store there. Nevertheless, even after these arrests, he never came out to declare his connection with the murders in the year 2001 and kept on leading a double life on bail.
The arrest marks the end of one of the longest and most elusive criminal investigations that ever happened in Delhi, and this arrest finally brings justice to the victims, too late.
