Delhi on Saturday broke its own record it hit the previous day of the lowest minimum temperature as the mercury dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than Friday’s figures, leaving residents shivering in severe cold. Amid dense fog conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Saturday, January 10. It also predicted severe Cold Wave conditions in isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Cold Wave conditions prevailed over Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and North Interior Karnataka.

Saturday’s temperature is also lowest for this month in two years, when the city recorded 3.5 degrees Celsius on January 16, 2024, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Dense fog and chilly northwesterly winds have been attributed to be the primary reasons causing the temperature to fall and extend the cold spell over Delhi-NCR

Meanwhile, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped back into the ‘very poor’ category after a brief improvement to ‘poor’. The persistently toxic air continues to affect daily life across the city.

The overall weather outlook suggests persistent fog and misty conditions over the coming days. Dense fog is likely during morning hours, while moderate fog may continue through the day. High humidity and cool temperatures will dominate, leading to reduced visibility, especially in the early hours. Delhi Airport issued a passenger advisory at 9AM today stating that current operations were conducted under CAT III conditions with possibilities of delays and cancellations.
