New Delhi: Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 33.8°C on Tuesday. This is the city’s ‘highest’ minimum temperature this season, and the highest since June 13, 2018 (34°C), as per Met department officials. An intense heat wave has gripped north India, with Delhi, the national capital, being under a ‘red’ alert for Tuesday. On Monday, temperatures in the metropolis soared to 45.2 degree Celsius as the brutal heat wave gripped the entire region. However, the India Meteorological Department has predicted some relief in the form of thunderstorms and light rain, which, according to the weather body, will result from an approaching weather disturbance.
Earlier on June 17, Ayanagar in Delhi reported a maximum temperature of 46.4 degrees.
A severe water crisis also continues in Delhi. The ruling AAP has come under fire from the opposition parties: the BJP and Congress.
Delhi is currently grappling with an extraordinary heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels. According to recent reports on June 17, 2024, several weather stations across the city recorded temperatures significantly above the seasonal average. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, noted a sweltering high of 45.2 degrees Celsius, a staggering 6.4 degrees Celsius above the typical 38.8 degrees Celsius for mid-June.
Also, in addition to the Capital, many parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness heatwave to severe heatwave conditions till June 19. Himachal Pradesh and Bihar are also expected to witness similar conditions till June 18.
The weather body said that the intensity of the heatwave would decrease in intensity after Tuesday. The IMD also predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated parts of Himachal Pradesh and Bihar on Tuesday.
It further said that hot and humid weather would likely prevail over Odisha till Wednesday, in coastal West Bengal on Tuesday and Jharkhand on Thursday.
The weather body predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely in parts of West Bengal and Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh till Friday and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Wednesday. It also predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Odisha on Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, in the country’s southern part, Chennai and nearby areas witnessed overnight rains, which brought respite to the city from the sweltering heat.
