New Delhi: An official confirmed Saturday that the Delhi Police dismantled an illegal immigration racket and arrested eight Bangladeshi nationals along with eight Indian accomplices who aided their unlawful stay in south Delhi. Furthermore, six other Bangladeshi immigrants have been deported through the Foreigner Regional Registration Office, and four others remain under scrutiny.
Authorities broke up a sophisticated scheme during the operation to forge identity documents and to launder money through digital payment apps with cross-border proceeds, officials said. Some of them had enrolled their children in the local schools to make their stay in India permanent, police said.
“We are trying to bridge the gap between us and the Bangladeshis to put an end to their illegal entry into the country,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankita Chauhan, adding that the network aided Bangladeshi migrants to enter India in an illegal way by giving them shelter, getting to work, forged Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and even Indian passports.
Md Alamgir from Bangladesh, who entered India in 2007 as a scrap dealer, is among those arrested. He married an Indian woman who has two children, aged 13 and 9. In 2021, his younger brother, Md Jewel Islam, arrived and was in the scrap business as well. One of the other key accused, Md Rejaul, had been living in India since 2000, got an Indian passport, and often used to travel between India and Bangladesh, using these trips to carry money and goods.
Also, Kamruzzaman, who had entered India in 2014 on forged documents and was working with an online food platform as a delivery agent, was also arrested by the police. Md Latif Khan was a ragpicker in Delhi who has been a resident since 2015 and would often send money back to Bangladesh through informal methods; Mohammad Nadeem Sheikh was a cleaner in Delhi. Md Mizanur Rehman, who had arrived in 2022, was a scrap dealer, and Rabiul, who had come in 2022, was a hospital attendant.
