On Saturday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that Delhi could expect light rain, lightning, and strong winds late in the evening. IMD claims that the cloud system heading from the northwest to the southeast will influence the national capital within 1–2 hours of their 3:23 PM advisory.

The IMD said that a hollow area in the mid and upper atmosphere, stretching from northwest to southeast, is working to change the weather system. Consequently, it is likely that there will be showers and lightning throughout the majority of Delhi. The department said gusty winds of 50–60 kmph are expected, and now and then they could go as high as 70 kmph.

There is a forecast of light rain, lightning, and gusty winds of 50-60 km per hour blowing from grid-A to grid-F in Delhi over the next 1 to 2 hours.

So far, May has been very unusual, and this new weather development is simply another unusual sign. Based on records from IMD, May 2022 was Delhi’s wettest month ever, and the city did not see even one heatwave day. From May 1 to May 30, the city saw 188.9 mm of rain, which was much more than normal.

The area faced multiple thunderstorms and high-speed winds this month, and one of those storms upset the broader National Capital Region (NCR). Thunderstorms will continue in northwest India for the next several days as the southwest monsoon gradually advances across the whole country, predicts the IMD. The constant rain is the result of having cyclonic circulations in two places: western Rajasthan and northern central Uttar Pradesh.
