New Delhi: A part of a house came crashing down adjacent to a building in Karol Bagh, New Delhi on Wednesday; several people are believed to be still trapped under the debris. The fire department was very swift to the disaster by sending five engines to the scene for the rescue mission. This is close on the heels of a Dargah wall collapse in the Nabi Karim area of central Delhi on September 13, which claimed one life and left two people critically injured. In that situation, the rescue teams were always able to pull out at least two of the three victims that were still alive but stuck under the debris.

The latest example of the collapse of buildings happened in Billa Dargah, which is a locality in Karol Bagh, and the search operation for the people trapped is in progress. During the operations, a man was rescued alive from the rubble but later died in the hospital, having been pronounced dead upon arrival.

This comes after another case of building collapse in Zakir Nagar, Meerut, wherein a three-storey house collapsed and led to the death of 10 persons. It happened last Saturday, and 15 people were pinned beneath the rubble of the building. Three people were able to exit during the crash while search and rescue operations continued in an effort to get other people out of that building.

District Magistrate Deepak Meena stated that they are offering monetary support to families of the victims of the Meerut incident. For a person who lost his life, the compensation of ₹4 lakh will be paid from the natural calamity fund, and in addition, ₹1.20 lakh will be paid for the destruction of his house. Related to this, assistance in this aspect of compensation is also being coordinated, involving pro-offered financial services to families who lost their animals in the disaster.

While condoling the death in these collapses, both SP and Congress demanded the government to provide adequate compensation to the dead and the homeless. These incidences have elicited concerns about the appropriate safety standards for dated and frail structures, particularly in highly congested population regions.
