New Delhi: Delhi’s heatwave has claimed its first victim, a 40-year-old man from Bihar’s Darbhanga, who died of a heat stroke in the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.
Breaking all of its previous records, Delhi’s temperature on Wednesday peaked at 52.3 degrees Celsius. However, BJP leader Kiren Rijiju said that it is unusual for the mercury to cross the 50-degree mark. Therefore, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is currently verifying the reports.
Meanwhile, parts of Delhi and Noida received showers on Wednesday bringing some respite to residents. The 40-year-old man who was pronounced dead had been living in Delhi for the past five years and was working at a factory manufacturing pipeline fittings. He was brought in by his roommate and other factory workers post-midnight on Monday.
Delhi is expected to experience partly cloudy skies on Thursday, May 30, with heatwave conditions in certain areas, predicted the regional weather office on Wednesday, adding that there is a chance of a thunderstorm with very light rain or drizzle. Shifting from a ‘red alert’ for Delhi heatwave on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department’s regional office sounded an orange alert for Thursday. It forecast that temperatures will decrease by 2°C to 3°C.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that the record-breaking temperature of over 52 degrees Celsius recorded in Delhi’s Mungeshpur was an “error in sensor or local factor.” The IMD is currently examining the data and sensors to verify the accuracy of the recorded temperature.
In different parts of the national capital and neighbouring NCR, the maximum temperature varied from 45.2 degrees Celsius to 49.1 degrees Celsius. Mungeshpur reported 52.9 degrees Celsius as an outlier compared to other stations. However, the weather agency claimed that this discrepancy could be due to an error in the sensor or specific local factors.
