A petition will be heard in the Delhi high court requesting more security measures in the Uttam Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi before Eid, after concerns of the possible communal tension increased. The petition was submitted by the Association of Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) urging the authorities to instruct the Delhi Police to ensure greater coverage and to provide sufficient security.
This appeal was heard before a bench headed by the chief justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia. The issues have become bigger following a recent incident during the Holi celebrations, in which a fight between two families escalated to violence. The fight had apparently started with a water balloon thrown by an 11-year-old girl and striking a woman who then argued which led to a physical confrontation.
There were eight people injured in the incident and a 26-year-old man, Tarun Kumar died the next day due to the injuries. A case has been filed as per the appropriate provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The citizens, especially of Muslim faith, have complained of fear of retaliation and even of violence, citing the inflammatory utterances that are spreading in the social media. The citizens of the country have called out in favor of peace and security, particularly as the Eid festival comes near.
In the meantime, the police officials have promised sufficient security measures. The government has held peace conferences, and it is in the process of eliminating inflammatory material on the web. Authorities have called on people to be calm as they strive to bring societal peace in the region.
