New Delhi: The Delhi High Court said yes to Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea in relation to the excise policy case and issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation. At first, the court supported CBI, asserting that Kejriwal should have gone to the lower court first. However, the bench later on was convinced to take into consideration the substantive appeal by Kejriwal directly to the High Court during argumentation.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of Kejriwal, urged the Apex Court to note that his client is not a flight risk and is not involved in any terrorist concerns. Identifying this, Singhvi said that Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI after getting bail in the Enforcement Directorate’s money laundering case.
In her order, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna noted the notice and stated that the matter concerning Kejriwal’s petition directly to the High Court would be discussed during arguments. For further hearing, the court put up the matter for July 17. Kejriwal has already filed an appeal against his arrest in the CBI case; the matter is still sub-judice before the High Court.
Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested by CBI, and he was already in judicial custody in Tihar Jail in connection with the ED Black Money case. Arrested by the ED on March 21, Kejriwal got bail from the trial court in the month of June; however, the High Court has restrained this bail.
In recent days, the trial court has put Kejriwal on judicial remand till July 12 in the ED’s money laundering case apart from hearing his application to have his wife accompany him during consultation with the medical board of AIIMS.
