New Delhi: Delhi High Court directed MCD and DDA to immediately close the coaching centers running in violation of fire safety norms.
Following a report by the Delhi Police revealing that only 67 out of the 580 coaching centres in Delhi possess valid fire clearances, the Delhi High Court has taken a firm stance on fire safety regulations.
A bench headed by Justice Yashwant Verma which had earlier ordered inspection of the coaching centers in Mukherjee Nagar by a team of lawyers, also asked the authorities to reinstall the electrical equipment installed outside their premises, which are open to the public can be potentially dangerous. This order came on several petitions on the operation of coaching centers in the area.
In fact, a case registered by the High Court itself after taking cognizance of the incident of fire in a coaching center in Mukherjee Nagar area in June 2023 was also included. Many incidents have happened regarding this. After taking cognizance of the fire incident, the High Court itself registered the case.
The court had earlier noted that provisions under the Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) 2021 permit coaching classes in residential areas subject to certain conditions. A valid fire NOC is also a must for such coaching centres, it had said.
The court had, in July 2023, warned that “there cannot be a coaching centre running contrary to the MPD, 2021” and ordered the closure of such institutes running in contravention of the MPD 2021.
