Delhi High Court has highlighted the flaws in the investigation and trial of three cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The court has ordered the re-creation of these records, as the old records are no longer available. This case is related to the riots in Raj Nagar, Delhi Cantt, where all the accused were acquitted in 1986. The court said that without the records, the decision cannot be properly investigated.

During the hearing, the High Court judge stated that best efforts should be made to obtain such records from all sources so that the court can render a final decision on the present criminal revision petitions. Let us tell you that the lower court had acquitted all the accused in 1986. These cases are related to the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Raj Nagar area of Delhi Cantt in November 1984.

Further, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court for summoning a police official’s report allegedly mentioning the presence of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamalnath during a riot at Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib on November 1, 1984 which claimed two lives.

What Lead To the Anti-Sikh Riots in 1984

In 1984, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered a massive military action against those who were sheltering in Amritsar’s Golden Temple, the faith’s holiest shrine. About 400 people, including soldiers and pilgrims, were killed during the military raid known as Operation Blue Star. Sikh groups dispute this figure, claiming thousands died.

Later, on the morning of 31 October 1984, India’s prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards as she stepped out of her official residence in the capital Delhi. The news of her death sparked violent attacks on Sikhs by her supporters in Delhi and beyond, with nearly 3,000 killed within days.

More than forty years on, victims continue to seek justice, as many accused remain acquitted and appeals are still pending in court.
