A bone-chilling cold wave has enveloped northern India, with the national capital, Delhi, shivering at its lowest temperature of the season, a frigid 4.8 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, predicting that the city’s minimum temperature could plummet further to 4 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
According to IMD data, the lowest minimum temperature during this period was recorded on December 6, 1987, at 4.1 degrees Celsius.
The biting cold has also affected other states, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and the northernmost region of Jammu and Kashmir which received fresh snowfall on Wednesday.
The severe cold wave has disrupted normal life in many parts of the affected regions. Schools and colleges have been closed in several areas to protect students from the harsh weather conditions. People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible, and those who have to venture out are urged to wear warm clothing and take necessary precautions.
The IMD has attributed the cold wave to a strong western disturbance and cold winds from the Himalayan region. The weather agency has also warned of dense fog in the morning hours, which could further reduce visibility and lead to disruptions in transportation and other activities.
In Jammu and Kashmir, fresh snowfall has added to the winter woes of the people. The picturesque valleys of Kashmir have been blanketed in a thick layer of snow, creating stunning winter landscapes but also causing difficulties in transportation and power supply.
The cold wave is expected to continue for the next few days, and authorities are on high alert to deal with any potential emergencies. As the temperatures drop, it is crucial for people to take care of themselves and their loved ones to stay safe and healthy during this harsh winter season.
