Delhi government is preparing to open around 40 new Atal canteens near government hospitals. According to officials, these canteens are being designed in such a way that people staying in hospitals for long periods of time can get affordable and timely food. Under the new arrangement, these canteens will remain open for 12 hours continuously, from 10 am to 10 pm. Currently, Atal canteens operate in two fixed time slots: from 11:30 am to 2 pm and from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.
The government believes that family members who stay with patients in hospitals often stay there all day, so it’s important to have food available throughout the day, rather than for a limited time. The opening of the new canteens is expected to provide significant relief to those in need, attendants, and hospital staff.
Delhi is rapidly expanding Atal Canteens under the Affordable Meal Scheme. Currently, 71 Atal Canteens operate in the city, and the goal is to increase this number to 100 by the end of March. Initially, these canteens were primarily located near slum (JJ) cluster areas, but the government has now begun prioritizing high-traffic public spaces like hospitals, so that patients’ families and those in need can directly benefit.
The government has allocated a budget of ₹104 crore to implement the scheme. Each canteen provides lunch and dinner daily, with a limit of 500 plates of food per canteen per day to ensure affordable food access for as many people as possible.
