New Delhi: The Delhi government has taken important steps to make the Yamuna River pollution-free. The government is going to survey all those drains that are not connected to the sewage treatment system. Efforts are being made to prevent untreated, dirty water from these drains from entering the Yamuna. Work has started to stop such leakage in 22 major drains.

According to Delhi government officials, an expert agency will be selected for mapping the drains that are not connected to the sewage network. This agency will prepare a map of the drains whose dirty water is falling into the Yamuna. The survey work is targeted to be completed by September, after which a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared by the engineers. The government plans to implement these projects by December 2025.

The Delhi Jal Board has been working on the Interceptor Sewer Project for the past few years, which aims to divert all drain water to the nearest sewage treatment plant (STP). However, it is not possible to completely stop leakage from major drains like Najafgarh and Shahdara. In this situation, a plan is underway to trap 26 of the 182 sub-drains and treat the remaining water at the mouth of the drain. Apart from this, leakage of 9 out of 22 drains falling into the Yamuna has been identified, and efforts have been made to partially stop leakage in Delhi Gate and Sen Nursing Home drains. This work is expected to be completed by December 2027, while the flow of seven drains has not yet been diverted to connect to STP.

The government is going to evaluate the capacity of its sewage treatment plants (STPs) through the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The purpose of this process is to assess the output quality of small STPs. The CPCB will inspect all STPs and their outfalls by July 2025, after which the Delhi Jal Board (DJP) will prepare an action plan. Necessary improvements will be made based on this plan.
