After Diwali, preparations are underway to bring artificial rain showers from the sky in the capital Delhi. That too from man-made clouds. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that a plan has been prepared to create artificial rain through cloud seeding technology. Now, we just wait for the green signal from the Meteorological Department and favorable weather. Sirsa said that if everything goes as planned, artificial rain can be created the very next day after Diwali. The aim of this initiative is to reduce pollution levels and provide relief from the smog that increases after the festival.

A special Army 206H aircraft, stationed in Meerut and operated under the supervision of IIT Kanpur, will induce rain by spraying silver iodide particles into the clouds. Two experienced pilots with over ten years of flying experience have completed four successful trial flights so far. Now, northwest Delhi awaits its first artificial rain, which could occur the day after Diwali or soon after.

The government believes this experiment will help reduce the pollution and smog that often builds up after Diwali. Experts say that if successful, it could become India’s first large-scale urban cloud seeding project.

What is cloud seeding?

Cloud seeding is a technique that prepares clouds for rain. It involves releasing specific chemical particles (such as silver iodide, salt, or dry ice) into moist clouds, which accelerate the formation of ice or water droplets. According to scientists, nimbostratus clouds, with altitudes of 500 to 6,000 meters and containing more than 50% humidity, are considered most suitable for this process.

Five trials, environmental protection

The Delhi government plans to conduct five trials in northwest Delhi to test the technology’s success under different weather conditions. Water samples will also be tested after rainfall to ensure there are no negative impacts on the environment or water quality.
