The Delhi Startup Yuva Festival 2026 which was officially launched on Friday at Netaji Subhas University of Technology by the Delhi government is an attempt to create a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students. The minister of education, Ashish Sood, who was present during the opening, noted that students are the most important people since they are the leaders of innovation and suggested that more connections be established between schools and industry markets.
Speaking to an audience of students, mentors and industry executives, Sood emphasized the fact that universities are not a narrow educational institution but an entrepreneurial and innovative one. His point is that the festival would help to encourage the students to turn ideas that were generated on campuses into market-ready products, thus stressing the need to foster talent at its inception.
Sood also wrote on the phenomenal rise of Indian startup ecosystem in the last ten years. Although India was never much in the industry prior to 2014, the country has been experiencing a sudden growth. India is the third-largest start-up ecosystem in the world with almost 125 unicorns and more than 1.97 lakh startups registered by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). He attributed this growth to reforms at the time made through policies and an enabling entrepreneurial environment.
The minister also emphasized the fact women are increasingly getting involved in the entrepreneurship business, citing that about 45 percent of Indian startups are women entrepreneurs. He described entrepreneurship as a powerful means of social and economic change, and highlighted that women-owned businesses create a major impact in terms of job creation, community building and inclusive growth.
The government of Delhi under the leadership of Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta is focused on making Delhi the centre of innovation led by the students. The Startup Yuva Festival will be developed as an annual event, which will bring educational institutions and mentors together with investors and industry players to develop a vibrant ecosystem among young entrepreneurs.
