The Delhi government plans to ban refueling old petrol and diesel vehicles in the capital from April 1. More than 80 per cent of the petrol pumps in the city are being fitted with equipment that will identify vehicles whose registration has been cancelled. According to officials, the automatic number plate recognition cameras being installed at petrol pumps will not only identify old vehicles but also those without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.
This new system is being implemented at around 500 fuel stations in Delhi. If a vehicle violates the rules and comes to refuel, this system will identify it and signal the pump staff to stop giving fuel to it.
What did Manjinder Singh Sirsa say?
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa informed that the latest technology is being used to make this scheme successful. Emission monitoring devices are being installed at petrol pumps, which will make it possible to identify vehicles without a valid PUC certificate and necessary action will be taken. He also informed that these devices have already been installed at more than 80 percent of petrol pumps.
The Delhi government’s transport department had canceled the registration of over 59 lakh vehicles till September last year. As per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are automatically removed from the transport department’s database. If such vehicles are found on the roads or in public places, they are seized.
