New Delhi: Pollution in the capital Delhi is continuously increasing and the air quality has reached the severe category. Even on Monday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded above 400 in many areas of the city, causing difficulty in breathing for the people. AQI was recorded at 431 in Anand Vihar and 401 in Bawana, which falls in the “severe” category. Apart from this, 23 areas are in the red zone, where AQI remains between 300 to 400. In most of these areas, the air quality has remained above 350 continuously for the last three days.
Major areas included in the Red Zone and their AQI:
Alipur (328), Ashok Vihar (366), Burari Crossing (342), Chandni Chowk (371), Karan Singh Marg (309), Dilshad Garden (315), ITO (304), Jahangirpuri (377), Mundka (356), Narela (345), Nehru Nagar (321), North Campus (317), Okhla Phase-II (314), Patparganj (321), Punjabi Bagh (327), Pusa (303), R.K. Puram (316), Rohini (379), Shadipur (320), Sirifort (314), Sonia Vihar (350), Vivek Vihar (366) and Wazirpur (388).
There are many areas where the AQI is below 300, but the air quality is still considered poor. These include DTU (293), Dwarka Sector-8 (290), IGI Airport (257), Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (294), Lodhi Road (267), Major Dhyanchand Stadium (281) and Mandir Marg (290). However, some areas recorded relatively less pollution. Najafgarh’s AQI was 173 and Aurobindo Marg’s was 149, which falls in the “Moderate” category.
23 areas in the red zone
However, the air quality on Monday showed a slight improvement compared to Sunday. Yesterday, 27 areas were in the red zone, while today that number has dropped to 23. Still, pollution has made breathing difficult for people in Delhi. A blanket of fog is visible in the mornings, while the rising AQI has led to increased complaints of eye irritation, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.
