New Delhi: Delhi has seen no relief from toxic air even in the second week of November. This morning (November 9), 23 areas of Delhi are in the red zone, with AQI levels above 400. This falls in the extremely dangerous category. The situation is such that Delhi is now facing a ‘breathing crisis’.

Poor air quality and falling temperatures in Delhi are causing health problems such as colds and eye irritation. The Meteorological Department has predicted increased fog and cold for the next five days. Delhi’s temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days, leading to further cold.

Delhi has become the second most polluted city in the country with a 24-hour average AQI of 361, according to CPCB data. Several areas, including Zirpur (420), Burari (418) and Vivek Vihar (411), recorded severe pollution levels, while most other areas remained in the very poor category. In the NCR, air quality also reached hazardous levels in Noida (354), Greater Noida (336) and Ghaziabad (339).

The AQI in Delhi and its surrounding areas has worsened since Diwali and shows no signs of improvement. The AQI is hovering around 399, and in some areas, it has even crossed 400. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the situation doesn’t appear to improve in the next 15 days. The main reason for this is the PM2.5 level in the air reaching 338 and the PM10 level reaching 503. Experts are describing how dangerous this air is by saying that breathing this air is equivalent to smoking 9 to 10 cigarettes daily.

Many areas of Delhi remain in the red zone, with 23 areas having an AQI above 400. Wazirpur and Bawana have the highest AQIs, with 436.
