New Delhi: In a major crackdown, the Delhi police have washed off over 560 kg of cocaine, which was estimated to be worth ₹ 2,000 crore, which has been one of the biggest drug seizures made by Delhi police. The operation thus led to seizures of the massive haul in South Delhi, and after that, four individuals involved with drug peddling were arrested. Officials believe that this operation is connected to an international drug cartel which is run by Afghan men in New Delhi.
The latest bust was preceded by the arrest of two other Afghans suspected to be involved in another drug-peddling ring. These people, Hashimi Mohammad Waris and Abdul Nayib were arrested during an operation launched Saturday in Tilak Nagar, where police seized from them 400 grams of heroin and 160 grams of cocaine. Waris, who has been living in India as a refugee since January 2020, now has a family in Afghanistan. When he arrived in India, he was first employed in a chemist’s shop in Vikaspuri as a helper.
Waris was pulled into the drugs business when a friend approached him with an invitation to pick consignes from different sources within Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). According to them, he charged approximately $100 for every successful delivery. Nayib, who also traveled to India with his father in January 2020, is a registered refugee. Apart from his father, all his family members still live in Afghanistan. This is where Nayib, located at Vikaspuri chemist shop, comes across Waris in the following episode, convincing Nayib to join the drug business with promises of a luxurious life.
Police are now investigating the further link with this drug production by looking into ways where these Afghan nationals were able to expand themselves in drug-related businesses within the capital. It shows how hard task force members are still working on the case of eradicating drug abuse in societies.
