New Delhi: All six accused detained in connection with the IAS aspirants’ death in Old Rajender Nagar were taken into CBI custody for four days by the Delhi court on Saturday. This decision was taken a month after their arrest; during the tragedy on July 27, there was flooding in the Basement of the Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalvin were killed.

Further, Chief Judicial Magistrate Nishant Garg said that the accused Abhishek Gupta, Deshpal Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Parvinder Singh will continue to be in CBI custody up to September 4. Sophisticated, the CBI sought this extension of custody to continue interrogation, which is essential for investigation.

The Delhi Police was handling the case, which was later handed over to the CBI on August 2 due to doubts over the quality of the investigation. The charges being sought by the CBI are culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence and several violations of building norms and fire security.

As per the recent application filed by the CBI, the basement of the building where the tragedy happened was used as the library-cum-exam hall late into the night for extended hours of self-study and examination, thus violating the occupancy certificate, which allowed it only for car parking, cart storage and car lifts.

The CBI also found that the coaching centre ran without a valid fire safety certificate. A show cause notice was served to RAU’s IAS over an alleged violation of the provisions of the Delhi Master Plan 2021 and for misuse of the property. When the owner and CEO Abhishek Gupta was asked if he had a fire safety certificate from the Delhi Fire Services, he said he had secured one on the 9th of July, 2024.

The CBI’s ongoing investigation tries to solve these regulatory violations and identify those responsible for the numerous deaths.
