New Delhi: The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, reserved its order on the bail plea of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjay Singh in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. The court will pronounce its verdict on December 21, 2023.
Singh has been in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) since October 4, 2023, after being arrested in the case related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi government’s liquor policy. The ED has accused him of receiving Rs. 2 crore from a businessman who benefited from the policy, and of having links to other accused persons in the case.
During the bail hearing, Singh’s lawyers argued that the ED’s case against him is based on flimsy evidence and that there is no concrete proof of his involvement in any wrongdoing. They also emphasized that he is a sitting MP and has cooperated fully with the investigation.
The ED, on the other hand, opposed the bail plea, arguing that Singh is a “flight risk” and that he could tamper with evidence if released. They also presented call detail records and other documents to support their claim that he was involved in the alleged scam.
The judge, after hearing arguments from both sides, reserved the order for December 21, 2023. The ruling on Singh’s bail plea is being closely watched by political circles and could have significant implications for the AAP government in Delhi.
It remains to be seen whether the court will grant Singh bail or send him back to judicial custody. The upcoming days will be crucial for both Singh and the AAP, as the court’s decision could impact the party’s political standing and the ongoing investigations into the Delhi excise policy case.
