New Delhi: A couple died of suffocation due to the smoke from a coal stove in their home in Dwarka area of Delhi on Wednesday morning amid the severe cold. The neighbours came to know about the accident when they heard the crying of the two-month-old baby and informed the police. The initial investigation revealed that the husband and wife had kept the stove burning inside the room to keep warm.

The police have sent both the bodies to the mortuary for postmortem. According to M Harshvardhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dwarka district, the couple originally belonged to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh and lived in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Enclave in Pochanpur, Dwarka.

The couple were identified as 23-year-old Manav and his 22-year-old wife Neha. Their baby Ayush is currently admitted in the ICU of a hospital. Manav’s mother Gulab Rani lived separately with her 12-year-old son Ajay at a distance of 100 meters from the house. Manav’s brother Govind said that they had been living in Delhi for almost six years. About three years ago, he married Neha, who lived in Palam. The crime and FSL teams reached the spot and collected evidence. The police are investigating the case.

According to the doctors, the coal or wood used in the stove emits carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases when burning. When the coal is burning in a closed room, the carbon monoxide increases and the oxygen decreases. This carbon affects the brain directly and spreads in the body through the breath. Due to the effect on the brain, the person sleeping in the room becomes unconscious. The neighbour broke the window and entered the room and found both the husband and wife unconscious. The neighbours then informed the police around 9:30 am.

When the neighbour called the police, he was told that there was a child crying in a room in Sector 23, Dwarka area and their parents were unconscious inside the room. The police then reached the spot. The house where Manav was living belonged to a businessman. Manav worked as a caretaker for the owner’s pet dog. He took care of the dog’s food and water. The owner used to visit the place once or twice a day to check on them.
