On Wednesday, a sharp criticism was voiced by the Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta who denounced the racial abuse of three women of Arunachal Pradesh origin in Malviya Nagar stating that Delhi is home to all and dignity and security of all citizens should be given priority.

In a video message, Gupta claimed that no woman would be harassed, discriminated or humiliated at any rate. She promised to take legal action drastically against the culprits and she even promised to meet the victims herself. We are very much alike, and it is our prime business to see that all our daughters are safe, she said.

The incident was reported when a video of a couple purportedly throwing racial slurs and threats to the three women was going viral on social media during a quarrel. As the police claimed, the fight took place on the previous Friday around 3.30 pm when the women aged between 19 and 23 were having electrical installation work in their rented house. Other dust caused by the work was said to have landed in the flat below causing a confrontation.

The accused, Ruby Jain, 35, and her husband Harsh Singh, are arrested by the police. It was determined that the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been applied using available evidence. An Assistant Commissioner of Police now has the investigation under his care as required by the law.

The incident was also condemned by several political figures such as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia who urged that appropriate measures be taken against racial discrimination.
