New Delhi: Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva is suffering from breathing problems and skin rash after a recent swim in the polluted waters of the Yamuna River.

Sachdeva soon developed skin rashes and respiratory problems and was advised to get medical help a couple of days after the odd happenings. The Delhi BJP’s official social media handle quoted him as saying that he was admitted to the RML Hospital, where he was given medicines to be taken for three days.

Sachdeva was only trying to protest against the unfulfilled promises made by the Delhi Government, especially the former Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, about the cleanup of the Yamuna River. They are all laid down in Kejriwal’s promise to turn the Yamuna River water free from pollution by 2025, which, according to Sachdeva, remains an unfulfilled endeavour.

Subsequently, after Coming out of the hospital, the Delhi BJP released a statement vowing to expose the city’s administration and claiming that the AAP government had mismanaged and “corrupted” funds that were supposed to clean up the river.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to the fore and reacted very aggressively to Sachdeva’s action. Minister of Environment Gopal Rai, for his part, labelled the BJP leader’s health problems as ‘drama’ and said that the opposition resorted to hyping pollution problems to score points. To this, Rai countered that the BJP’s position was an obvious strategy of deflecting attention away from the BJP-ruled Centre and talking about more recent and specific failings of the Delhi government to deal with the Yamuna’s pollution on a longer-term basis.

Before this march, Sachdeva sat by the Yamuna’s shore near the ITO intersection and called AAP leadership impotent. He asked both the chief minister Atishi and AAP national convener Kejriwal to accompany him in visiting the river to see the condition. Saying so, Sachdeva said that such an inspection would expose what the administration has done to the river and to the people of Delhi.

This protest shows that political enmity persists in Delhi, with each blaming the other for environmental deterioration and health risks.
