The low visibility and heavy fog in the entire of Delhi and much of North India on Thursday morning halted air travel in the early morning hours leading to major airline companies sending out travel advisories. Carriers like Spice airways, air India, and IndiGo advised the passengers to check the status of their flights prior to traveling to the airport. Officials estimate that at least 22 of these flights had been cancelled, and more than 250 were postponed at the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport by poor visibility, which was created by heavy fog.
The traveling disturbance also took place against the context of some other pollution-controlling steps which were announced by the Delhi government. These are new curbs that are intended to cut down automobile emissions and control worsening air quality in the national capital. Some of the key actions involve the transfer of government offices to the hybrid work mode, limiting the entry of specific types of vehicles in the city, and making the ownership of a legitimate Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate mandatory.
These measures are in addition to the Stage 4 restrictions by the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4) which the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) had placed on Delhi on Sunday, December 16 following three days of three days of consecutive high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels since Saturday, December 13. Even though, AQI has slightly improved since that time, it still remains in the category of very poor.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa explained that the vehicle that was not registered in Delhi or those that did not meet the BS-VI emission norm would not be granted entry into the city whenever the GRAP Stage 3 or Stage 4 is taking place. The Delhi Traffic Police and the transport department will have enforcement teams at the city borders and the petrol pumps beginning Thursday to ensure strict compliance.
The last government order which came out on Wednesday states that the entry ban only will be imposed on GRAP Stage 4.
