After the alleged discovery of a large pile of cash at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma in Delhi, a major controversy erupted. Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyay had an in-house inquiry on the matter and on Friday gave a report to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna to Delhi High Court news agency reports.

Justice Upadhyay had kicked off the internal investigation before the meeting of the Supreme Court collegium held on March 20. The evidence and information the inquiry gathered during the process of inquiry is included in his report. The issue is now expected to be weighed by the Supreme Court collegium for its comments and decisions on the future course of action.

It was on March 14 when the Holi celebration began at night, and fire authorities were called to Justice Varma’s official residence in the capital’s Lutyens’ zone at 11:35 p.m. after a fire engulfed it. When the fire was brought under control, it was alleged that large sums of cash were found in the building. The mystery surrounding the situation is still there; however, there is not the exact amount of money that has reportedly been found.

It was more complicated because Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg contradicted these reports when he asserted that the fire department personnel did not locate any cash at Justice Varma’s home while responding to the emergency. Several questions and public attention to the case have been raised by this conflicting version of events.

The matter is still drawing scrutiny and after Justice Upadhyay’s report is submitted to the Supreme Court collegium, all eyes are on the collegium to decide whether further action is appropriate. The event has raised fears over transparency and accountability within the justice system.
