Delhi Police on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that the anti-CAA demonstrations of 2020 were planned to coincide with the visit to India by then US President Donald Trump with the intention of attracting maximum media attention around the world. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju presented the submission when he opposed the bail requests of activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the case related to February 2020 Delhi riots.
As the representative of the Delhi Police, the ASG observed that the demonstrations were not simply spontaneous recovery against the Citizenship Amendment Act but a greater conspiracy to disorganize the government. The end goal is to change the regime. The demonstrations under the CAA were a red herring given the actual intention was to cause economic instability, rampant disorder, and internal disruption in the country, Raju informed the bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria.
He also argued that the time of the violence was not by chance. The riots were premeditated in such a way that they happened during the visit of the US President Donald Trump to achieve international exposure. These alleged intellectuals are worse than low-level terrorists, he said with the accusation that the accused exploited his position and contacts to develop convolutions that would humiliate the nation at the global level.
The ASG also claimed that most of the time delays taken in the trial proceedings were mostly by fault of the accused themselves, furthermore stating that they should not be allowed to utilize the delays they themselves had created. He emphasized that this would send the wrong signal as the allegations against him are of serious nature and taking the form of conspiracy to commit acts of communal violence killing more than 50 people.
The Supreme Court was in charge of the arguments, but has not given its verdict concerning the bail requests.
