On Saturday, the legendary Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi was threatened by a bomb through email and the threat was later turned out to be a hoax, as confirmed by the Delhi police. The luxury hotel was immediately surrounded by security forces, and a comprehensive search had to be carried out. No weapons or suspicious items had been detected, and the threat was called a hoax.
The incident occurred only a day following the fact that the Delhi High Court also received the same bomb threat via an email stating that several IEDs had been planted within and around the court property. This threatening email was sent at 8.39 am using an Outlook account, and it stated that the premises should be vacated before 2 pm. At about 10:40 am, the message, which was full of political rhetoric, was sent to Registrar General Arun Bhardwaj. The panic and the scare dismantled the court proceedings. An hour later, however, the bomb squad failed to find any explosives after an hour-long search and declared the premises safe.
A bomb threat email was sent to the historic building of the Bombay High Court in south Mumbai within hours after the threat to the Delhi High Court. Law enforcement agencies initiated a large-scale security operation, evacuating individuals and searching the place. Similar to the previous situation, the menace was later pronounced as a hoax.
This is hardly the first occasion that Delhi has experienced such scares in recent weeks. There was also the alarm of a bomb threat email sent at the beginning of this month to the Delhi Chief Minister Secretariat and the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC). Checks by police were made on bomb squads, sniffer dogs and technical teams, but to no avail. The email was later clarified by senior Delhi Police officials to be actually intended for journalists in Tamil Nadu, and the email was referring to the Secretariat of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
These recurring hoax threats have brought serious security concerns and misuse of digital platforms to spread panic concerns resulting in authorities.
