Triggering speculations about him entering the Rajya Sabha, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday announced its candidate for Ludhiana West assembly bypoll as Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora.

An industrialist from Ludhiana, Sanjeev Arora has been an MP in the Rajya Sabha since 2022. Ludhiana West’s seat fell vacant after the demise of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi last month after which his candidature for the bypoll was announced. The decision has led to a heated political debate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party demanding to know if AAP is smartly paving the way for Kejriwal’s parliamentary debut.

As the first to react, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya was skeptical about the move. In this vein, he asked whether it was to clear the path for Arvind Kejriwal, who lost his own seat in New Delhi, to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab.

Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill joined the criticism of AAP’s decision and asked three key questions:

  1. Kejriwaal wants Rajya Sabha entry or he wants not.
  2. Does Kejriwal want to be excused to live in government accommodation in Delhi?
  3. Have they all succumbed to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) on power after the defeat in the polls?

This is as AAP’s crushing loss in the 2022 Delhi Assembly Elections changed Kejriwal’s political orientation towards Punjab. BJP’s Parvesh Verma did defeat Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, forcing him to resign as Delhi Chief Minister.

This has turned into a bonanza for governing parties, as there is a glimmer of hope that Kejriwal will aim for a Rajya Sabha seat in Punjab. An AAP electoral setback won’t eclipse him from national politics if he manages to secure a nomination. Yet, opposition leaders contend that as per right, Punjab should find a representative there than outsiders like Kejriwal.
