The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-election voting started in the morning on Wednesday with stringent security measures all over the national capital. Counting centres were established in areas such as Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole market, Pushp Vihar and Mandawali. By the end of the counting, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had become the easy winner gaining seven out of 12 wards.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got three wards, the congress got one ward and All India Forward Bloc got a single ward. Such bypolls were held on 12 seats in MCD, nine seats of which were already occupied by the BJP, and three by the AAP. The elections are based on the sweeping victory of BJP in February 2025 in Delhi where the party established its substantial presence in the capital.
The Chandni Chowk ward was first won by BJP with its leader Suman Kumar Gupta winning by 1,182 votes, thus determining the smooth sailing of the party. Shortly thereafter, Bjp candidate Anita Jain won the Shalimar Bagh B seat, which had previously been held by a long-serving Bjp leader Rekha Gupta who was the then Mayor of Delhi.
The bypolls were considered as one of the major signs of political action in Delhi particularly before the impending municipal and assembly fights. Political observers are closely looking at voter turnout, candidate performance and ward trends to check the development of change in the sentiment of the people. The fact that BJ P has managed to hold most of its wards even after losing two of the seats it previously held is being taken to mean that the party is still enjoying the confidence of the electorate.
In the meantime, the fact that AAP won three wards is a morale boost after it had been performing badly lately and the fact that Congress won a seat is an indication that it is trying to be relevant again in the political arena of the city. Results are now announced and all parties are likely to increase their outreach at the grassroots in the coming months.
