On June 20, Manish Sisodia will have to report to Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) following fresh summons the group has issued to him. The officials have been summoned because of continuing probes into alleged misdeeds involving ₹2,000 crore in the support systems at Delhi’s government schools.
Officials involved in the case say that Manish Sisodia missed the earlier summons for June 17, providing prior engagements as an excuse. Since he needed to postpone his appearance, the ACB published a new notification inviting the LG family.
An entry into the case has been made this April, regarding the AAP government’s failure to appropriately use funds meant for building over 12,700 semi-permanent classrooms between 2015 and 2020. At first, the project’s purpose was to fight the shortage of classrooms in government schools, but it is now criticised for high costs, no transparency, and post-tender increases that were not approved.
It was found that the average cost to build a classroom was five times higher than the original estimate given by the market. It was noted by the ACB that installing semi-permanent structures, made to last up to 30 years, poses more challenges than reinforced concrete structures with a life span of up to 75 years. Officials think that the reasoning behind these purchases was not clear or justified by facts.
Recently, Satyendar Jain had to answer questions about the case and told investigators he turned over important responsibilities to Sisodia while he was in charge of the education department.
Because of several complaints filed, the probe was started. Investigators are checking if any mistakes were made intentionally or if any basic errors were committed throughout the management and running of the big project. The next moment with the ACB could strongly affect the outcome of the case.
