A Hong Kong-bound flight of Air India Friday caught fire as it landed at Delhi airport, forcing panic but causing no injuries. All the passengers and crew members were evacuated.

The mishap happened in Flight AI 315 that made landfall in Delhi on July 22. As per the airline, the aircraft caught fire following the auxiliary power unit (APU) after it landed and parked at the gate.

An Air India spokesperson stated in an official statement that Flight AI 315, which was operating on the route Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, reported a short-time auxiliary power unit (APU) fire after landing and parking the aircraft at the gate. The accident happened as people had started disembarking, and as the system was designed, the APU was automatically terminated.

The spokesman added that there were no passengers injured despite the aircraft having some damage because of the fire. The passengers and the crewmembers got out normally and are safe. The plane has been referred to conduct more investigations, and the regulator was informed.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) too issued a statement in this regard, promising to investigate what caused the fire and that emergency response teams had quickly contained the fire.

APU, which is mounted at the aft side of the aircraft, supplies electrical sources and air conditioning even when the engines are not running. Although APU fires rarely occur, they pose a major safety consideration and require emergency treatment at the first instance.

Air India also highlighted that as it is always the matter of primary concern to the airline, nothing was done in a rush regarding the safety of the passengers on board. The stranded plane will also be checked and required repairs done before being reactivated.
