On Thursday, AAP announced its first list of 11 candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections that are due in 2025.

This is the starting move on the election chessboard that the party has taken in order to actualize its plans for the often sensitive election. It consists of fresh faces along with several leaders who were either from BJP or Congress but joined AAP recently. Among them are former BJP leaders Brahm Singh Tanwar, Anil Ja and BB Tyagi and former Congress leaders Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad, Veer Dhingan and Sumesh Shokeen, all of whom have been part of the party in the last few months.

The list of candidates and their respective constituencies are as follows:

  • Brahm Singh Tanwar: Chhatarpur
  • Anil Jha: Kirari
  • Deepak Singhla: Vishwas Nagar
  • Sarita Singh: Rohtas Nagar
  • BB Tyagi: Laxmi Nagar
  • Ram Singh Netaji: Badarpur
  • Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad: Seelampur
  • Veer Singh Dhingan: Seemapuri
  • Gaurav Sharma: Ghonda
  • Manoj Tyagi: Karawal Nagar
  • Sumesh Shokeen: Matiala

The announcement of the candidates is made at a time when the AAP is internally in a messy state. Only days before it, a crucial member, Kailash Gahlot, proceeded to resign from the AAP minister and from the party itself.

His resignation, which is a major setback for the party, saw Gahlot switch his allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In his yet another resignation letter, Gahlot pointed to ‘serious issues which the party is facing internally’, some ‘shameful scandals’ and poor response in terms of poll promises made to the people of Delhi. Gahlot’s joinery to the BJP has also piled up the political pressure on AAP as it goes back to the 2025 Delhi assembly polls, which are expected to be sensitive.
