Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, in a symbolic protest against the increasing incidences of dengue, malaria and chikungunya in Delhi, on Friday reached Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House with mosquito repellent nets around them. This protest was also meant to attract attention to what the party referred to as a lack of action by the BJP-led civic administration in controlling the spread of vector-borne diseases in the capital.

At the head of the protest, the Opposition Leader of MCD, Ankush Narang, accused the ruling BJP government of not putting in place effective preventive measures against the kind of mosquito-borne illnesses. Today, every member of the Aam Aadmi Party came to the House with a mosquito repellent net to draw attention to the skyrocketing malaria, dengue and chikungunya cases in Delhi, Narang told the press. He also criticised the present administration by saying that, unlike the awareness campaigns that were conducted under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the BJP has no proper plan on how it can fight these diseases.

Narang has reported, in accordance with official statistics given by BJP officials this week, that 36 incidences of malaria have been observed this week, adding up to 333 cases per week, the highest in the past 5 years. According to AAP leaders, the alarming figures indicate that the public needs to be informed and that more preventive measures need to be stepped up.

Reacting to the objections, the Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh told the media that the general body meeting of the MCD discussed several civic concerns, such as the health of the people, cleanliness, and ward-level issues. He promised that prevention efforts have also been stepped up, including medicine stocking, regular spraying and fogging efforts being undertaken to stem the spread of mosquito-borne and water-borne illnesses. Singh has underlined that the Corporation holds a duty of protecting the health of the people and making close observation of the disease patterns in the city.

This demonstration, where symbolism was combined with the call to take immediate action, was related to the increasing social anxiety about the problem of mosquito-borne diseases in Delhi, as a result of which the authorities strengthened preventive measures and informed the citizens.
