Chitradurga: In a tragic road accident in National Highway 48, at Gorlathu Cross, Hiriyur taluk, Chitradurga district, Karnataka, no less than nine individuals were killed and 21 others injured. The fatal accident happened on Thursday when a privately owned sleeper coach that was on its way to Shivamogga overturned with a lorry that was moving in the other direction. Reports by the police indicated that the lorry had crossed the central divider after which the lethal blow occurred.
The impact of the injury resulted in the instant catch fire of the sleeper coach trapping some of the passengers inside it. Witnesses reported the scene to be terrible with the bus being in flames and mangled to ruin. The majority of the deaths were experienced when people could not get out of the burning car. East Zone Inspector General of Police Ravikanthe Gowda established that the bus had 32 passengers when the accident took place and at the accident, many of them sustained severe injuries including fatal wounds caused by burns.
Fire services and emergency teams had to arrive at the scene to contain the fire and save lives. The injured passengers were taken to the nearest hospitals where medical staff are offering treatment to burn victims and other injuries. The pictures of the accident site circulated on social media of how much damage the two vehicles were in and how burnt the bus was indicating how terrible the crash was.
The reason behind the accident is being investigated by the authorities. Initial investigations indicate that the lorry driver could have been negligent, which might have caused the vehicle to run off the central divider. The police officials are also looking at the issue of whether over-speeding or other traffic offences contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has caused tremors in the community and the authorities are encouraging drivers to be cautious on the roadways and follow traffic rules strictly.
