Haryana Congress In charge Deepak Babaria tendered his resignation on Monday, holding moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the Haryana Assembly polls. It was a negative swing for the Congress as the outcomes exposed exit poll prediction. Babaria stated that he submitted his resignation to the party headquarters immediately after the defeat but has not heard from the party. He said this to a news agency, “I offered my resignation after the results. That is why I told the high command that if it wanted, it could replace me. This decision was made because I was unwell and believed it was the right thing to do, especially after the election result.”

Babaria also said that after the Lok Sabha polls, he had tendered his resignation from the post of state Congress in charge of Delhi, but the issue was left unresolved. His resignation recently came in the wake of a recent rethink within the Congress in view of the party’s loss in Haryana.

The Congress leadership was particularly compelled to summon a post-mortem meeting in order to try and establish the cause of its dismal performance. Besides, leaders noted numerous conditions, which probably predisposed the outcome of this meeting, and it was concluded that a fact-checking team should be organized. This team will interview all the candidates to learn the reasons for the loss and improve the learning process. It was also reported that the party candidates had complained of ‘anomalies’ in the EVM Machines, which the fact-finding team is supposed to look into.

This self-assessment step by the Congress is in line with the other processes aimed at dealing with electoral problems that the party faces in this and some other states, as well as reconstructing the party’s plan for the subsequent elections.
