A fresh attack was made by the Congress on Saturday on Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the central government initiative of 7,500 crores to help women in Bihar financially. On Friday, the scheme, christened Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, was virtually launched by Modi under which 75 lakh women in the poll-bound state received an initial sum of 10,000 each to assist in self-employment and livelihood ventures.

When a Congress general secretary (communications), Jairam Ramesh, alleged that Modi was indulging in vote rigging, he created a parallel with vote chori, a term employed by the opposition parties to lament perceived electoral fraud. He noted the perceived irony in the fact that the same Prime Minister had spoken out against the Karnataka government in the past, when it was offering 2000 to 1.3 crore women monthly under the Griha Lakshmi scheme, and remarked that now Modi is doing the same around Bihar.

The scheme offers some initial financial assistance of 10,000 per woman and is likely to be increased to 2 lakh in case of successful and expansive growth of individual enterprises. This project, costing 7,500 crore, is among the larger plans of the NDA government in empowering women economically and entrepreneurship in Bihar.

Ramesh also wrote that the Bihar government countdown had already started, and the current Chief Minister Nitish Kumar could be defeated in the coming election, and even the influence of the Prime Minister could be questioned. He added that Nitish Kumar has become history, and when the outcome is announced, Prime Minister Modi will also become history.

As the Bihar Assembly elections will be held in the latter part of this year, the criticism of the Congress can be seen as an increase in political rhetoric as parties seek to affect the voting mood and examine election-related welfare programs.
