Mandya: The communal tensions that arose in Nagamangala town, Mandya district of Karnataka, prompted an unequivocal warning from Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister of the state, on Thursday, saying that he would apply the iron hand against those who try to fuel the caste or religious conflicts. Responding to the same through a tweet posted on social media site X, formerly Twitter, Siddaramaiah called on the public to refrain from being used by provocateurs. He particularly urged the community to engage in good cooperation with the security forces in the conservation of peace and order.
The chief minister also came on record to condemn the acts of vandalism and social unrest, saying that the government was deeply worried about the situation. To this, he said the following: ‘‘The government of Congress is to ensure that there is order in the society and such an incident will not be allowed’. Over 50 people have been apprehended in relation to the violence, showing the government’s prompt action.
The disturbance started when two groups engaged in fights after some stones were reportedly pelted from the mosque on the Ganapati procession on the main road, Nagamangala. The attack made several Hindu youths furious, and then they put Ganesha idol infront of the police station and started a Dharna. The protest then degenerated into the burning of shops and tires to emphasize their grievance in the process.
Mandya District Collector Kumar told the media that 54 persons have been nabbed in connection with the violence. In order to do so, the authorities put in prohibitory orders to prevent people from gathering and shut schools and colleges in the area on Thursday. The government is still keen to avoid any more exacerbation and to guarantee the safety of the people in the district.
