Mumbai: Chhota Rajan, infamous for many criminal activities, including murder, kidnapping and possession of arms and ammunition, had a henchman who was evading arrest for 32 years. On a quick search, Mumbai Police arrested him. The man who is accused of multiple dreadful crimes, including rape and murder, was brought to justice after eluding the police for over 30 years; sources said that he was found in Chembur, Mumbai, on Thursday.

The arrest took place after locals gave information on Pawar’s location to the police. Based on this information developed by the police, they immediately converged at the said place and arrested him. The police department maintains that Pawar has criminal cases against his name for various police stations in Mumbai, including murder, ransom kidnapping and possession of prohibited weapons. He appeared before a sessions court in the city for further trial.

This arrest occurred against the backdrop of several legal performances, including the former boss of Chhota Rajan. Rajan was released on bail in the murder of Jaya Shetty in 2001 back in the month of October by the Bombay High Court. A division bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan has set his bail at ₹1 lakh, although he has been earlier convicted and awarded a life sentence in the same case.

Further, in 2023, the CBI court proceeding also exonerated Chhota Rajan for plotting the murder of Mumbai trade union leader Dr Datta Samant in 1997. Nonetheless, Rajan continues to rot in jail due to other criminal trials in other parts of the country.

The arrest of Pawar shows that law enforcement agencies continue to target old-generation criminals involved in Organized crime. It also discolours the continuing agencies’ investigation of Chhota Rajan’s criminal cum-business empire despite having evolved into a nonentity on agents’ radar for more than two decades.
