Raipur, Nov 13: Under strict security, voting for the Chhattisgarh by-election to the Raipur City South assembly constituency began on Wednesday.
After Brijmohan Agrawal, a former state minister and sitting BJP legislator, resigned after winning a seat in the Lok Sabha from the Raipur parliamentary constituency earlier this year, the seat became vacant.
According to a poll official, voting will start at 7 am and run until 6 pm. According to poll officials, the assembly constituency has 2,71,169 electors, which includes 1,33,800 men, 1,37,317 women, and 52 transgender people.
Although there are up to 30 candidates running for the by-election, most people believe that the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP will face off directly. The opposition’s nominee, Akash Sharma, is a youthful figure who serves as the president of the state Youth Congress unit, while the BJP has put forward Sunil Kumar Soni, a former Raipur MP and mayor.
For the byelection, 253 polling places have been set up and over 1,000 security guards have been sent out. The counting of votes will be held on November 23.
The BJP won 54 of the 90 seats in the state during last year’s state assembly elections, surpassing the Congress by 35 seats and the Gondwana Gantantra Party by one seat.
