Kersao: A case of cattle meat smuggling has been reported from the district; the locals, especially the Kersai villagers, helped expose the issue. According to the villagers, two young men they apprehended on suspicion of transporting cattle meat on a motorcycle were arrested. It was alleged that the villagers overpowered the suspects and then proceeded to assault them before subduing and surrendering them to the police. This incident was reported in the Tapkara police station area.
As per sources, the people of Kersai village got input that two youths were carrying beef from Odisha towards the border region of Kersai in Chhattisgarh. Based on this information, the villagers felt the urge to tail the suspects they were observing riding a bicycle. For instance, a case is seen where the villagers chase them for several kilometers before recapturing them. In searching for the food, even the villagers found a big bag full of meat from cattle.
The villagers alleged to have assaulted the suspects before taking them to Tapkara police station in the country’s North East. The two accused persons are Saddam Khan and Taufiq, both hailing from the state of Odisha. When arrested, they were riding a TVS Apache bike and were said to be proceeding toward the Jashpur district with more than one quintal of cattle meat, according to the police.
The local authorities have recently taken the case to establish how deep the smuggling ring is. From the capture of the accused by the villagers, attention has been drawn to community vigilance in the rural areas, particularly those that have been prone to such unlawful conduct. What this case shows is a growing partnership between the inhabitants of the border areas and the police in fighting cases of cattle theft.
