Raipur: A brutal assault of a tribal youth in Raipur is reported to have led to his death and was followed by a massive political uproar. The head of PCC, Deepak Baij, has blamed the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel for its inability to guard the tribal population. Several leaders, including Baij, criticized the tribal Chief Minister, stating, “Even tribals are not safe under the rule of a tribal Chief Minister, the tribals of Bastar are not safe even in Raipur. ”
The accused erred when he thought he was dealing with Mangal Murya, a 21-year-old tribal youth from Lohariguda in Bastar and an orphan, as both his parents were dead. Mangal was studying in the first semester at Kalinga University in Raipur. It was June 24, at 1 AM. He was standing at Kalibari Chowk when two boys who were bike riding stopped in front of him. When Mangal offered them a lift, they began to argue wildly; some of them started to abuse him. When Mangal protested, the situation worsened.
They dragged Mangal onto their bike, and they headed to BSUP Colony in Bhata Gaon on the bike. That is where they started thoroughly beating him up. For instance, on search, they recovered his ATM card, his passbook, and other things. They wanted Mangal to provide his ATM password when he hesitated, they used their fists and kicks to attack him and further banged his head firmly on the road, which caused his death. These two accused have been arrested by the police as they sought to carry out their gruesome mission.
Deepak Baij condemned the Home Minister for incompetence and wondered why anti-social elements could not be controlled. Baij further mentioned, “In the last six months crime has escalated wherein criminals are doing chain snatching on foot, knife attacks take place in police stations, and Naxalite attacks are also on the rise; rapes are taking place on a daily basis; the Home Minister cannot even handle his own district; Adivasis feel let down”.
