Mumbai: An 18-year-old woman tourist, who was on a tour of the city of Mumbai and its outskirts, was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver 2-days back.

The victim hails from Jashpur, Chhattisgarh. Maharashtra police launched a search operation after she lodged an FIR, and arrested the 26-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from Poyanje village located near Panvel in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

“On December 27, the woman hired an auto-rickshaw at Panvel to go to Gandhi Garden locality. However, the auto-rickshaw driver drove her to an isolated place near the Wadghar river bank and dragged her to bushes. He raped her after threatening to smash her head with a stone”, stated the senior inspector of Panvel police station Ajay Langde.

The Maharashtra police launched a search operation according to the statement given by the victim, booked the rapist rickshaw driver. A case has been registered against him under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 (Punishment for rape) and 506-2 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
