There was a tragic accident which occurred in Ramakrishna Hospital on Tuesday night, when three sanitation workers were killed when they were cleaning a septic tank within the hospital. The case happened in the Pachpedi Naka locality of Raipur and it has raised an outcry among the locals and the families of the victims.
The first reports indicate that the workers had gone into the septic tank to clean it when they were overcome by toxic gases that were in the tank. All the three workers fell and died in their positions one by one because of suffocation. The names of the victims have been established as Govind Sendre, Anmol Machkan and Prashant Kumar who are all inhabitants of Simran City.
In the aftermath of the incident, agitated relatives and residents assembled outside the hospital causing riots and fights with police officers. This was made worse when people on the streets insisted that the hospital management be dealt with sternly, on the grounds of gross negligence.
The families claimed that the workers were dispatched into the dangerous tank without any protective gear like oxygen masks, gas detectors, and protective gear. They alleged that the hospital tried to save money at the expense of being negligent to adhere to the necessary safety measures, and they hired unqualified labour to perform a very risky job.
Cleaning of sewage tanks is regarded as a high-risk project that usually involves the use of trained staff and specialisation. The government has already initiated an investigation into the event, and the situation is still not calmed down at the hospital, with demands to take responsibility and deliver justice still intensifying.
