Jashpur: Three Days ago, some villagers in Jashpur, Chhattisgarh district, found themselves marooned on an island after flood waters rose in the River. Earlier efforts by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to rescue the affected villagers also proved fruitless due to the rapid current in the river. The event started on Thursday morning when three villagers together with a woman forded the Ib River to graze their livestock. However, the constant rainfall and water released from the dam led to a sharp rise in the water level of the river and in this plight the villagers are stranded on an island in the middle of the river.
The event occurred in Babusajbahar village, Farsabahar region, and until now, the rescue operation has not been successful. Up to this date the villagers are stuck immobile on the island with no shelter from the weather or means to protect them from spending nights out on the open. Local people are getting more and more worried and have called on the government to step up the evacuation process to ensure that the stranded persons are evacuated as soon as possible.
Besides these problems the recent heavy rainfall has brought one more misfortune to it, where on the road between Bagicha and Kaliya there was a slit of a culvert which hampered traffic. On the directions of the Chief Minister, the repair work of the damaged culvert area has been started so that connectivity is resumed at the earliest. But the case at Babusajbahar remains grim as the villagers remain cut off waiting for humanitarian assistance.
Questions are being asked as to the severity of the situation now that the SDRF team that was with the rafts to carry out the rescue is unable to do so considering the very forceful stream of the river. The villagers whose cars were bogged down lagged behind and are currently waiting for the administration to give them another method to be used in the evacuation. The local people and administration wait for a positive outcome of the development day by day.
